Technical Requirements

Hardware
All degree students are required to assure they have at least the minimal requirements of hardware and software as detailed below.

Computer Requirements:
A basic Windows or Mac based computer that runs Windows Explorer 8 or Firefox 4 well should be sufficient for taking classes at Shiloh University.

All degree-seeking students should assure their computer meets the recommended specifications stated below due to the requirement to use Logos Bible Software.

[Note that your computer will run Logos with the minimum requirements listed below, however it might be sluggish. The recommended requirements are the preferred specifications for it to run well.]

The minimum Windows requirements:

  • Pentium 4 processor
  • 1 GB DRAM memory (2GB for Windows Vista or Windows 7)
  • Windows XP SP3
  • DVD drive (only necessary if you ordered the logos disc package)
  • 12 GB hard drive space on local drive  (May require additional space depending on your logos library)
  • 1024x600 pixel resolution display or similar
  • 256 MB DirectX 9 graphics device (especially for Logos)

The recommended Windows requirements for degree-seeking students:

  • Core2 Duo or Core i3 processor at 2 GHz or better
  • 3 GB DRAM memory (4GB DRAM preferred for 64 bit version)
  • Windows 7 (Windows XP SP3 is just fine here with 2GB of DRAM)
  • DVD drive (only necessary if you ordered the Logos disc package)
  • 20 GB hard drive space on local drive (May require additional space depending on your Logos library)
  • 512MB DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
  • 1280x1024 4:3 aspect ratio or 1366x768 widescreen display
  • Broadband Internet connection required for activation and updates

Note: Logos does say that Logos will run on a netbook Windows computer that meets the minimum requirements above, however, consider the performance on such a computer may not be satisfactory.

The recommended Mac requirements for degree-seeking students:

  • Mac OS X 10.6 or later
  • Intel only (PowerPC not supported)
  • Core2 Duo 2 GHz processor
  • 4 GB RAM (2GB minimum)
  • 20 GB hard drive space (May require additional space depending on your Logos library)
  • DVD-ROM (only necessary if you ordered the Logos disc package)

Note: Logos Bible Software for Mac is a new offering and is part of the packaged multi-platform product. It comes on the same DVD-ROM or as part of the same download.

Internet Access
A reliable broadband Internet connection is necessary for streaming video (384 Kb/second download speed minimum,) and for Logos software activation and updates. The Internet service must be reliable and provide live technical support.

Note: A public computer with Internet access such as those found at public libraries may be acceptable for working in the classroom site on certain occasions; however, the ability to move files on to and off of the computer's hard drive is required. Using such a computer may not allow you to compose required assignments in Microsoft Word.

Audio/Video
A video web camera and audio microphone are required for degree-seeking students to participate in the proctoring program required in some classes. The following are the technical requirements:

  • Web cam with 640x480 video pixel resolution or higher.
  • Headphones or working speakers connected to the computer.
  • Microphone connected to the computer (we recommend either a headset or a webcam that has a built in microphone)

Software for General Classroom Use
All students are required to own and install the following products:

  • Any major brand antivirus client with daily definition updates.
  • A recent version of a major brand of web browser. For maximum compatibility, we recommend Microsoft®, Inc. Internet Explorer® 8, or Mozilla Firefox version 4, with all current security updates applied. Other browsers may appear to work well, however there may be isolated classroom features that are missing the correct functionality.
  • Microsoft®, Inc. Microsoft® Word 2000 or later. This will be required to compose assignments and research papers for all of your courses.
  • Adobe Systems, Inc. Adobe® Reader® 9.4 or later. The latest version is available at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.  For security reasons please be sure to update to the latest release for the version you are running.
  • Adobe Systems, Inc. Adobe® Flash® Player 10.2 or later. This is available at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash
  • Apple, Inc. QuickTime Player 6 or later is recommended for courses that contain videos. This is available at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/.  Apple, Inc. iTunes Player is not required.

Software for Specific Courses

While the software is described below, students should follow the latest guidelines from the course materials document posted in the online classroom before purchasing software.

  • Logos 4 Bible Software "Scholar’s Library" package is required for degree-seeking students. Students who do not own Logos 4 should wait to purchase it until they enroll in the GS302/GS502 Computerized Bible Studies course.
  • EndNote X4 Student Edition or later is required for degree-seeking students to use for research papers. Students who do not own EndNote should wait to purchase the latest version when they enroll in the GS501 Theological Research, Writing, and Grammar course.

Communications
Students should own a personal e-mail account with at least 10 MB capacity. We recommend using a private account provided by your Internet service provider and not one provided by your workplace nor a public account such as Yahoo!, Gmail, Hotmail, et cetera.

The capability to receive and send faxes is optional but may be required for language classes.
